What is Meals on Wheels?

Meals on Wheels is a volunteer based organisation delivering meals to people who, through sickness, age and/or a disability cannot reasonably get a meal for themselves. This service allows people to remain with dignity and independence in their own homes.

There is no Means Test as eligibility is based solely on need, according to Home & Community Care (HACC) guidelines.

Recipients can receive meals on a long or short term basis, and delivery is 5 days per week or arrangements can be made for two/three days per week or according to need.

Meals on Wheels Patron, His Excellency the Governor of Tasmania Peter Underwood and Mrs Frances Underwood deliver a meal to a recipient.

The Service Offered.

Meals on Wheels provides a midday meal to the recipient in their own home each day, usually Monday to Friday, including Public Holidays.

The meal is delivered mainly by volunteer drivers and helpers between the hours of 10.00 am and 1.30 pm each week day.

The meal consists of three courses: soup, main course, a sweet and a vitamin "C" supplement, usually orange juice or blackcurrant syrup.

Depending on area, recipients can receive a hot meal to eat straight away, or a chilled meal to heat up later when it is convenient.

Frozen meals for the weekends and modified meals for special diets are also available.
